I thought I read it can hurt these computerized trannies to shift them manually is that true?
Also how do I modify my shifter to let me get 1st gear manually.I guess its locked out on 2.73 cars.

Most people generally agree that you should only manually shift when you have to on the 4L60E. When racing from a stop it won't do you any good anyway unless your car isn't running right and your tranny shifts early- mine will bring me just short of 6k every time before it shifts.
I've got 3.23s on mine but I hear there's something in the shifter that you can grind off so you can manually select first gear.

all i know is that down shifting can hurt any auto tranny, but no matter how i shift my a4 it shifts when it wants to its programmed to shift per the rpm range..
if i floor it and i am in 1st and push it to 2nd a 4700 rpm at 6000 rpm it will shift.....
it knows where to go

Just take the console apart and from previous post, all you need to do it remove a rubber bushing that keeps the shifter out of 1st. to the best off my knowledge it is fine to shift it your self, for instance 1 to 2 to 3 etc. But I would not recomend pulling the shifter from 4 to 3 to 2 etc. Best bet if you are at the track is to put it in drive (not OD) and just let the 4l60E work its magic.

The autos are good as long as they're flushed every 20k or so and you dont have more than 300ish rwhp...as you get above 300 the tranny will take it but the question then becomes for how long? Friend of mine had one last a little over 9k after he did a hotcam kit and complete exhaust, but it was really too much for a stock tranny...

I shifted an auto 2001 ss from 4th to reverse one time during a test drive. The car shut off and I turned down a side street real quick, put it in park and started it back up. Drove back to the dealer and said the car just didn't do it for me.
I still can't figure out how I did it, the lockout was working as far as I can tell, and I was just pushing the shifter forward without touching the button. Oh well, not my problem.

i am not sure on the Newer trannies, but on old trans (350 turbo 400..etc) if you really like manual shifting an auto. Can you still go Ratchet shift? That seems like it would be alot easier on most of you guys. I have a B&M Ratchet in my 85 Rx7 (307 and 350 turbo tranny outta an 81 olds) and it runs awesome nothing better then grabbing second without a clutch....except doing it with one.
