Mechanical Speedo Tranny in 97 Camaro
Mechanical Speedo Tranny in 97 Camaro
I am in the process of having an AOD Hybrid transmission built for my car. It was easy to get the parts needed to make the TH400 I had work with the electric speedo. Is there any items that convert a gear driven cable into an electric signal the stock speedo can use???
If not, can a 14 tooth reluctor wheel be made to fit the out put shaft and then make some sort of mount for the sensor to sit in. Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Craig

I have some cable drive parts and some VSS parts for GM's but I will obviously need a tad more enlightenment before we know if I can help.
Please forgive my ignorance
Mike.

I've been building racing transmissions for 16 years. One thing I can honestly tell you is...I'd like to find some way to put a GM transmission in a Ford. The AOD transmission is a giant pile of garbage. Why do you think Ford never even used them in a higher HP application?
I hate to see someone go through so much agrivation to install a transmission that's not near as good as what will go in the car easily...If it's not already there. A properly built 4L60E will outlast and outperform any AOD.

Yes, I am putting a Ford AOD in the car. I guess you guys haven't been to an NMRA or Fun Ford event. I know of some high horsepower cars running a properly built AOD for seasons on end. I don't mean 11 second cars either. Anyone heard of Roxanne Shepard??
I am a GM guy at heart, but I do know one thing. There isn't a bigger piece of junk tranny than the 4L60E or 700R4 out there when you put any sort of power to it.
The only GM tranny I would put in a Ford is a TH400 or a glide. I've done the 400 and I want overdrive back.
Either way Chris at CK Performance has the speedo figured out.
Thanks for the help.

The 4L60E is alot better performance transmission. unfortunately it's going to cost alot of people alot of money to find that out.

So I guess Mid to Low 9 second Mustangs aren't high powered. At this point, it is what I am going with. I will update everyone in the future. There is a high powered Turbo Buick and an LS1 car that have gone this route also. I know guys who built GM trannies for a living aren't going to like it.
I have seen plenty fast Fords running these trannies for the past four or five years.
Point blank 4L60E's and 700R4's suck, and I am not hear to argue that. I have the speedo thing figured out.
Thanks for the concern though.

Check out the Turbo Buick for yourself. This tranny has been behind 700 plus horse for two years without a glitch.

This guy primarily builds GM trannies. This AOD will stand up to 900 plus horse in a 3,500lb car.
Every wink link you mentioned above is taken care of. I don't believe I will snap a 300M input shaft.
Frank,
I actually emailed you a few times in the recent past. You weren't very confident about building a 700R4 for a high 9 car...
I do know you have a great rep on the board, and I appreciate your input.

Re: Mechanical Speedo Tranny in 97 Camaro
Mike,
It can be done if the proper JW Bellhousing is intalled on the tranny. A custom Pro Torque convertor is used (front half GM, back half Ford). It will be a straight forward install. All I need is to have a D-shaft made with an AOD slip yoke made up at Denny's. The shifter and cooler will not be changed. I just had to buy an AOD mount for the cable. I purchased a stock A4 crossmember, which worked with the LS1 AOD swap. It is a little more straight forward since I already had a TH400 installed.

Wow. I learn something new everyday around here. I would imagine these special parts are expensive though. I have not built an AOD yet so I really have no educated comment as far as whether I might consider this mod. I have built several C4 & C6's and was impressed with some things I have seen in the C6 as far as being a strong design. Some even more than the TH400 and TF727.
I hope the project turns out well for you.
And have fun!!!
