manually shifting 700R4

Is manually shifting an automatic transmission (Specificly 700R4) bad for it? with a shift kit? is it something i could do all the time or just when racing?

Re: manually shifting 700R4

i usually race at the track in 3rd gear, i manually shift sometimes but found better track times in drive. i manually shift on the street sometimes just to play around and act like i have a manual, but a stockish tranny seems to like drive better rather than manually shifting.

Re: manually shifting 700R4

Shift kit in stock 700R4 = soon to be busted tranny, been there, done it in my old 85 Z28. Come to find out shift kits just really aint that good for those tranny's stock, put a $1700 rebuild on it so it could hold averything, and went to the track, found a very consistent 1/2 second difference between shifting it and not.

Re: manually shifting 700R4

You won't hurt it by shifting it manually. Mine has been shifted manually for the past 4 years while racing...BTW, I've been building automatics for over 14 years...

If your Cable is adjusted correctly you shouldn't ever have to shift it manually..

AT WOT, the cable doesn't matter... it's the weights in the governer that determine the shift point.

I've shifted mine manually at the track since I've done a cam swap. Stock shift points aren't any good for the cam and I really don't want to mess with changing the weights.

speedingpenguin, yes, he did mean drive. (as opposed to overdrive)

Re: manually shifting 700R4

lol yeah cause the Catera (my current car) has 1-2-3-d-n-r-p or whatever.....so when he said "3rd", to me i thought "eek! 3rd gear its SLOW!", but thats just the catera.....meh, nevermind that then :-P
and yeah, at the track i shift the catera manually cause anything over like4500 RPM's the engine doesnt make much power, so if i shift at 4000 RPM's, it actually shifts more like 5,000 (As opposed to the 6500 that it will go up to in drive)

Where are these weights located?..

Re: manually shifting 700R4

The "weights" are in the governor. The governor is under the round cap that's located on the drivers side of the trans...right in front of the tailhousing. The governor weights and springs control WOT shift points in a 700. The lighter you go on the weights and/or springs the later the shifts will become. They work off cetrifugal force. Fluid pressure pushes the valve in the governor in one direction, until that pressure is overridden by the force of the weights opening.
