Major m6 transmission trouble
After a recent trip back from my g/f's house ~8 miles from my place, after coming around a corner I found myself unable to shift into any gears. I was stuck in neutral, it refused to go into gear.
I called a buddy at my place (I was almost back home), and he helped me push it off the road. We then played with it a bit, and were able to get it into 1st gear. After getting home (still in 1st), I played around and it shifted fine for a few minutes, and then locked me out of all gears again. After pushing it 10 feet to a parking spot it now will go back into gear again.
Any ideas what to check out before I take advantage of my AAA card's free towing?? The clutch fulid is full.
The car only has 39k miles on it, 9k of which are mine, and fairly gentle, but I believe the previous owner wasn't afraid to punish it. I also noticed a very faint whine when slowing down in 5th gear ~50mph for the last week or so.
Thanks guys,
-Josh

Re: Major m6 transmission trouble
I would check the fluid.. Make sure for one it has.. and 2 that there is no evidance of metal shaving's etc.. does it go in gear w/o the car on? What kind of clutch is int he car? IF it does go in gear w/ the car not running.. what happens when you start it while in gear?
Re: Major m6 transmission trouble
Tranny.. Before I got mine done under warranty, my tranny would not hold reverse, it would snap out. Maybe your problem is the synchromesh??? That's what mine was. But it is wierd that it would hold you out of ALL gears at the SAME time!!
As far as the wining goes, I have that problem, that's your rear end, and I had it rebuiilt, but the sound comes at 50-55 mph as well, i;d consider that normal.

The car shifts though all gears butter smooth with the car off.
I think it is a problem getting the clutch to fully disengage?
I haven't tried to start it in gear yet, i'll try tonight.
Thanks for the ideas guys.

Yeah, check the clutch hydraulics, you might want to take it apart and reinstall, bleed it and try again. If that doesn't work you'll have to take the tranny out and inspect the entire clutch assembly...
Re: Major m6 transmission trouble
How exactly do I remove/bleed the system? I see I can get a Master Cylinder @ Advance Auto for $79 if I need to. I don't think this is anything beyond my capabilities, I've just never done it before.
Thanks,
Josh
