m6 trans removal tip

Maybe you guys know this already, but i didnt. I was removing my m-6 Trans from an LT-1 today, and after removing all the bell housing bolts, i couldnt get the trans more than 2 inches from the motor, it was hanging up on the clutch fork, and TO bearing. The quick solution is to pull the fork to you, away from the TO bearing, it will release, and the tranny will come right out. I was fighting this for about an hour before i realized what to do. I am an old school mechanic, from the 60's, and 70's. More times than not, its an easy solution, but i keep going back to the old days, and thats not the way GM did it back then. Hopefully this saves one of you guys an hour. Next time i will post and ask!

Good tip. I removed a T-56 that had been swapped into a thirdgen once, to sell it. I could not get the darn thing to let go, until I figured out the fork issue. I'll admit, though, it took me more than an hour...

I've had my M6 out 3 times (97ss). I angle the engine trans down a bit while support on a wheeled floor jack with a fabbed trans fixture. Remove all the bolts on the trans (not the bell), and it pulls free.
Then, I remove the bell hseing.
When I assemble the trans to the engine, I use the clutch to pull it forward and align the spline/ main-shaft brg/ bell-dowels. Assemble the clutch fork (temp), and, push clutch peddel by hand. It will pull the trans forward into engine-clutch while disengaging the disc so all three (spline/ main-shaft brg/ bell-dowels) can align. Works like a deam. None of the manuals have this technique detailed. The M6 weighs about 135lbs. B.
