M6 to A4 conversion (searched)

Im thinking of tossing the t-56 and going automatic. What is involved in the swap besides the following:

-Transmission
-Flywheel
-Removing Clutch Pedal, and center console

Would I also need to swap out the PCM, driveshaft? Now I know the 4l60's are not too strong, but I would need the overdrive. How would it be, being that I have 4:10 gears in my 12 bolt? Any information and suggestions are welcomed. Thank You Guys!

You will need a new cnmputer from an auto car. Why do you want to get rid of your t-56 anywaY?

If you have LT1 Edit you won't need a new PCM, you can just upload an automatic file onto your existing PCM. You might need to get a wiring harness, there are a lot more wires/plugs on the Auto, and frankly I'm not sure if those are on the M6 harness. (My car went Auto->M6.) If they are there, then you'll at least need all the connectors and have to do a lot of soldering.

You'll want to get pedals from an Auto car, not just removing your clutch pedal (and I'm sure you'll be able to find someone doing an M6 swap that would buy your pedals/swap with you).

Your driveshaft will be fine as is.

You'll need the transmission mount brace. The M6 brace is different (again, find someone doing a swap the other way).

Your track may be picky about you having a Drive position key lockout... maybe the M6 Key lockout is good enough? I don't have a key lockout in my M6 swap and I haven't been caught yet at the track.

In the process of that currently. I swapped, the pedals, engine harness, shifter plate, ECM, Flywheel, tranny crossmember. All pretty easy. The best thing to do is to find someone with a A4 95 car just the same as you, and swap the stuff out. 4:11 gears will be fine with an A4, especially since you have a built engine that can handle the revs, and a cam that makes power that high. An A4 car with 4:11's in OD still has lower cruising RPM's than a Th350/400 car with 3.42's.

A Th400 would suck, plain and simple. I am not sure what size tire you run but with a 26"tire, you will cruise at about 3000 RPM's @81mph in OD, 2000 Rpms you would be @ 55. With a 28" tire your revs would be a tad lower. I am getting 4.11's in my 12 bolt as well.

Most of the converters I have seen are 10" or less. I would say that your combo would need a 3500+ stall converter. Vig, Yank, Pro-Torque, Midwest, Edge, Fuddle, TCI, all have good converters. You could contact any of them and they should be able to recomend the best for your setup. I thought it was nice to swap with someone that had everything. You can do it however you want, but you will want to get it from the same year car. The trannies, and harness are different for different years, 94-95 are very similar but would require slight modification.

Man, I could use some sunny Cali weather right about now....

Hint, hint.

Good conversion link: http://www.afrashteh.com/tranny_pics/T56.htm Just reverse what is being said since its A4 to T56.

what is the harness composed of? Connectors for the transmission, to what? Back of PCM? What do you mean by "key lockout?" Also what about the bellhousing? Does the 4l60e just bolt to the block, without a bellhousing?

Re: M6 to A4 conversion (searched)

I did this in my 94,

I used a 93 700R4(it's a 92 case with 93 internals)

I wired my own lockup circuit, and replaced the VSS plug with one
from an auto.

I also had to use a 95 A4 Torque Arm bracket, and crossmember.

since the 93 trannys where not pcm controlled I didn't have to mess with the
pcm.

for the TV cable hook-up I broke off my cruise tab, and rotated it up top and welded it on. my cruise didn't work anyway.

took me about 2 days to finish it.

Also I used an external tranny cooler. Works well. I even put in a B&M Quicksilver shifter.
