LT1 TO LS1 rearend swap

I'm going to be doing a complete rearend swap from an LS1 to my LT1. The LS1 rearend is complete with brakes and all. What do I need to do besides bolt it in? I read a thread that did it the other way around. I'm just wondering if it's going to be too much trouble.

do you want ABS...I think LS is 4 channel and yours is 3. Injuneer could tell you if you could convert it or something.....I remember reading about it before

Like he said, just addressing the ABS related items. Make sure you have the LS1 E-brake cables and brackets.

The guy told me that it's a 3 channel. I'm gonna get new e-brake cables.

If your 96 has only ABS, its 3-channel. If it has ABS + TCS, its 4-channel. Life is a lot simpler if both cars are the same.

Fred I hoped you were going to chime in. I went to your website and couldn't find anything on this type of swap. Both are 3 channel rears. I was wondering about the brakes, his is leaving on the rotors and calipers. The e-brake brackets are on there too. Will I need to fab brake lines or anything? I'm just trying to add up all my costs vs shipping and buying the rear. Mine has a Torsen and could do mine that is here, but this one is pretty fresh and already done. Please tell me what you think.

I've never actually done the swap. But a buddy took the rear out of his 99 SS, with only ABS, and as I recall the brake lines looked similar.... "tee" on the diff housing would be the point you would connect to. Whether the LT1 hose from the chassis to the "tee" is the same, I don't know. The e-brake linkage is completely different, as I understand it.

I have a LS1 rear in my car. Since yours are both 3 channel it is a direct bolt in. You will need the LS1 emergency brake cables. I used the LT1 brake line from the brake line on the body to the rear but I think the LS1 one would have worked too. I had to use the LT1 wiring for the abs. The connector on the LS1 wiring at the body was different but the connector at the sensor on the axle was the same so the LT1 wires worked fine. The LS1 rear most likely has a torsen differential. Mine is from a 98 and it is a torsen.

The only way that a 98 f-body got a Torsen was if it came from an SS that was optioned that way or if someone changed it. All 98s came stock with an Auburn clutch type posi.
The use of the Torsen as a stock limited slip was in '99.

The one I'm looking at is out of a 99 T/A, and mine has a Torsen also.

is the LS1 rear stronger than LT1? Is the LS1 rear a 10 bolt still or was it a 12? Thinking about weather i should put gears in my lt1 10 bolt or get a ls1 and gear it.

The LT1 and LS1 rears are all the same weak 10-bolt. I've seen more stock axles break in the LS1 cars though, for some reason.

Could I take the LT1 axles out and put them in the LS1 rear?

apparently lt1 axles will not work with ls1 brakes and calipers. I had a guy here in town call to trade me his lt1 axles for my spare ls1 axles because his brakes were sticking out a 1/4" too far on each side because of it. I think there is a difference in the curve from shaft to hub. I do not know if ls1 axles will work with lt1 calipers, I have never tried it.
