LS1 VS. LT1 rear....

Is one stronger than the other. I have a 94 LT1 and a 99 SS. Which can hold 400 rwhp better. Thanks, Brian Kaiser

Nothing different between them except the year they were made. Both stock GM 10-bolts.

Re: LS1 VS. LT1 rear....

the only thing that's different is the ABS set-up. LS1 cars have 4-channel ABS with sensors on each axle tube and LT1 cars have 3-channel ABS with one sensor on the pumpkin.

this of course only applies if you're trying to swap them.

That info is false. You can have LT1 rears with 3 or 4 channel setups, and LS1 rears with 3 and 4 channel setups. Both LS1 and LT1 rear ends are junk.

Unhappy Re: LS1 VS. LT1 rear....

I was about to ask about that torsen differential. Did any 99 SS's come with that? What all can you do to your rear end that will make it as strong as it can be? Thanks, Brian Kaiser

Re: LS1 VS. LT1 rear....

All 93-98 had Auburn diffs, and all 99-02's had Torsen diffs, with the exception of a few 98's. 10 bolts do suck bad, the only way to get a little more life out of them is NO sticky tires, not even Drag Radials. A solid pinion spacer and TA girdle with stud kit may help some, but thats about it.

Re: LS1 VS. LT1 rear....

Stick with the Torsen if you must chose between the 2.

Auburns burn up really quickly if you put on DR's,the TORSEN held up much better and were trouble free.[I have over 2400 1/4 miles on the 2 so I speak from experience.]

I now have a 9" and am quite pleased with it,no more concern about the rear at all.

you're right...it's based on whether or not the car has traction control right?

Re: LS1 VS. LT1 rear....

Axle lengths are different. Gotta run ls1 style backing plates with ls1 axles, and lt1 with lt1 axles. If you try and mix match them you need to do lots of shimming.

Re: LS1 VS. LT1 rear....

i had a 2.73 lt1 rear axle, which is supposed to be really "beefy" because the teeth are the thickest. any way, i have also gotten my hands on a 3.23 from a ls1. this one however was massive, weighed way more, and just looks bigger. i know the dimensions are the same, but i took off the girdle and the insides were just amazing compared to the lt1's. the 3.23 axle had the entire pumpkin of the axle filled with gears and springs and all other kinds of stuff while the lt1 axle just looked weak on the inside. everyone here says that they are the same, well i must have switched from the auburn to the torsen then. either it was that or an aftermarket axle.
