Has anybody done this. I might have found a deal on a rear axle from an LS1 car. Does anybody know if this is possible or not?

 

Might try searching in the "drivetrain section".... I know there are a few differences..

 

I tried a search first, but the search wasn't working and kept giving me an error message.

 

This should be posted in the "Drivetrain" forum. The "search" is working fine... "LS1 axle" yielded 5 hits, 2 of which are applicable to your question.

Moving to "Drivetrain"......

 

Swap backing plates and axles and you're good to go.

I have had one on my lt 1 for about two years. The only thing I had to do was acquire the right E brake cables. Mine was a 3 channel ABS 3:42 geared unit.

 

So you didn't have to change any brake lines other than the E-brake?

 

Everything went right in. It tookme about two hours to do the job. The following day I drove from Sacramento Ca to Ga in three days, with no problems to date.

I have an LT1 rear in my LS1, and no probs. Only thing is it's easier if you can stay with the same 3-channel or 4-channel ABS setup you've already got (straight ABS or Trac-control). If you have traction control and get a non-TC diff, it's an easier conversion to make than if you get a TC diff for a car that's only 3-channel ABS.

 

Wait a minute. I'm lost.
Isn't the non-TCS set-up the one with the one sensor mounted in top of the gear housing and senses the reluctor ring pressed onto the carrier against the ring gear? And isn't that 3-channel?

And TCS set-up's have a sensor at each end of the axle housings which read reluctor rings cast into each axle shaft? And that's 4-channel?

If you install an axle from a TCS equipped 2000 T/A into a 97 without TCS, what all needs to be done?
Can you press a reluctor ring onto the carrier and drill the top of the gear housing to mount the non-TCS sensor?

Why?

So you went with a 3-channel axle into a 3 channel car correct? What is different about the E-brake cables?

Backing plates are different on LS1 and LT1 cars, your brakes won't bolt up.

As for the axles, some say that LS1 axles are just a weeeee bit shorter/longer.

 

SOME SAY??? LOL I say they are, I have both. I put a LS1 rear in my car and the LS1 axles are about 1/2 inch longer. I HAD to use the LT1 axles.

 

That's what I thought, but I didn't wanna spout off information that I was unsure of.
