loud gears

i just changed my gears recently from 2.73's to 3.23's, i installed richmonds since they were the easiest to get where i live and had a hard time getting anything else to fit a 2 series carrier, but now my car whines when im driving, is there any way i can make it a little quieter, maybe a different oil.....its so annoying especially on the highway on a long trip, this really sucks.

Unfortunately, if the whine is because of an improper installation the bad news is the pattern is mostly likely already "worn in" on the gears. Even if you take it back apart and readjust them, there is a good chance the whine will still be there. You can probably make it better but might not be able to completely get rid of it.

I'll move this over to the Drivetrain forum...

Richmond gears tend to be louder than other gears. But even so the correct way to quiet them down is to get the pattern as best as you can. I was told once that no gears should ever whine it's all in the pattern. Depending on how long you drived the car. Your gears might still be ok so I wouldn't pannick just yet.

I went through the same problem earlier this year, except I installed 3.73 Richmond's. My dad is a mechanic and has done many gear installations before (he installed the 3.42's into my '81 Z28 with no problems) so I know he knows what he's doing. Right from day 1 they whined really bad though, so he actually pulled the diff apart again just to double check all the measurements (which are stamped directly on the gears by Richmond) and everything looked fine. So we even took the car to a driveline shop to look at them (since they deal with this stuff on a daily basis). The guy checked the measurements and ran a pattern and said everything appeared ok, but he said one of the bearings seemed a little rough, so he replaced that and tightened in on the backlash slightly (1 to 2 thousandths of an inch) but they still whined equally as bad. The gear shop told us that maybe 1 out of 50 sets of gears they do will whine and cannot be adjusted out of it. So we had him reinstall the factory 2.73's and I got my money back from Richmond.

Unfortunately, some gears simply whine and it won't go away, and from what I've heard on here from other people's feedback is that Richmond's have been the most notorious for building whiny gears (although they're supposed to be very strong? ).

Unless the measurements are way off on your gears, chances are you're stuck with them.

the shop that installed them specialises in only gears and trannies, been in the business for over 20 years, he assured me that the install was perfect and he got everything right, i do trust him on the install, but what can i do, i tried getting other brand gears but richmonds were the easiest to get, i guess im stuck with them, hopefully i get used to them and won't bother me , , he actually sells motive gears and suggested that i use them, but he didn't have the ones for 2 series carrier, i had a really hard time finding the thick gears for my 2 series.thanks guys for your replies

well see the whine only appears when im driving foot on throttle, when i let off the throttle it goes away and it mostly whines on higher speed above 60 kph ( approx 40-50 mph), i guess its probably not the loudest thing, but you know going from factory 2.73's to this, but anyways he also installed a new bearing kit and assured me that everything was perfect in there.

Whoa, doing 70-75 mph must be around ~3000 rpm?! Do you have any 1/4 mile times with the 4.10's? I know what the 3.73's were like off the line, I almost can't imagine 4.10's!!
