Check the "rag" joint on the lower steering shaft. Its covered by piece of plastic. I just bought a steering shaft for a LS car, needs to be re indexed, but will eliminate the sloppyness in the steering. Other companys sell a solid plastic disk you can replace the "rag" joint with if you dont want to go the LS shaft way.
Unless you have an internal problem with the steering rack, this should be your problem.(since you said everythings tight up front). What did your guy mean by it might be in the trans? Last time I checked the trans makes your can go forward not used to make turns...hahaha
