lost 3rd gear

i just completed my rebuild about a week ago. I havent driven it hard yet bc my intake elbow is cracked and i definitely need a tune. well i have taken it for a test drive a few times and everything seemed well, but today i lost 3rd gear. First, second, and reverse work fine, but once it hits third the car just revs up. The speed slowly drops until i slow down enough to shift into second manually. any ideas? trans is freshly rebuilt and was working fine. i didnt get on it hard or anything it just stopped working.

You've got to add a "signature" with basic info about your car - year, model, engine, tranny and any major mods. We can guess from the description that its an A4.... but why make us guess?

Also, post on the correct forum. "LT1 Based Engine Tech" is only for engine related topics. I'll move this one to "Drivetrain".....

ahhhh.... there it is. The trans is freshly rebuilt, and like i said everything was running fine then 3rd just gave out i guess. Is it possible that a tune could fix this? I know my intake elbow has a crack and im running open headers so im sure my a/f ratio is messed up and the knock sensor is going crazy from the headers but that shouldnt bother my trans.

Could be alotta things but if it was a sudden loss i would imagine the snap ring either came out or broke the tabs on the 3-4 clutch set, In any case out it must come

You will have to tear the trans down at least half way and remove the input drum. Its easy if you know what your doing and could be a disaster if you dont

Most places are gonna want to rebuild the trans (local shops) and anywhere from 700 to 1800 dollars would be my guess. If you can swap it yourself I would suggest getting a performance built unit from one of us vendors instead of that.

Call around. Hit them hard and let them know you are only going to take the best price and just need this fixed, not a complete rebuild. Swapping them out isn't that hard but more than you might want to do. It should only take them a few hours (3?) so don't let them kill you on a price.

Or, you might just want to go to the junk yard and get one for a few hundred that is fairly new and should last a little while. I don't know what year your's is (lt1/ls1, '93/94-95/96-97, on and on) but just make sure the other one will fit.

Hal

I talked to a shop near by and they said 220 to replace the clutches in 3rd & 4th, And put in a new snap ring that came out in 3rd. Does this sound like a good price?
