Knocking.
Hi all,
Recently my car has developed an occasional knock from the transmission area, also a shake when down-shifting on deceleration.
Got the car up on my ramps and noticed some play at the propshaft end of the transmission,I take it there is a bearing/bushing in there that has seen better days.
Anybody know what this part is called and does anyone know the dimensions of this bearing/bushing so I can try and source one in the U.K.
Regards,Mark.

Just had a look at the T-56 exploded drawings on shoebox's website,am I right in thinking that the bearing at the rear of the transmission is called the mainshaft bearing?

After reading pages and pages of old posts it seems that people think that play on the "output shaft", as people call it,is perfectly normal.
Is this true?

Doesn't seem to be rpm related, sounds like a big heavy lump of metal is tapping the underside of the car,can be felt through the transmission tunnel.
Knock occurs whilst driving on uneven road surfaces also.Seems to subside if you press the clutch pedal in whilst it's occuring, almost sure the cause is something that rotates.Exhaust is solid, transmission itself feels solid, have bounced up and down on the suspension and not a sound, have even grabbed the motor and tried to shake it to see if mounts are loose, solid as a rock
Car shakes when downshifting to decelerate, helps if you blip the throttle to blend it more smoothly.Car also shakes when reversing but if when taking off forwards is ok and is fine under hard acceleration.
Just seems to randomly start knocking whilst cruising .
On perfectly smooth roads it doesn't seem to occur.
Had a new clutch and flywheel fitted a couple of months ago,but all has been well until about the last week.

Fixed the knock, exhaust was knocking against the tunnel brace under load.
The play in the output shaft must be normal .
Still have the shake when downshifting, maybe it's a weak tranny mount or maybe it's the paddle clutch .
