Just installed my 3.42 gears in my 96 vert.

I just replaced my 2.73 stockers with 3.42 from a 2002 ta and used ta carrier also.It was bascially plug and play. They seem very quiet and they made a huge difference in the fun factor and acceration of the car especially awesome around town. The car is totally different animal. Can hardly wait to add a nice stall to the car it should really fly.

1996 z28 vert a4 , mods: cold air, holley powershot filter,airfoil,ile bellows,tb bypass,magnaflow exhaust,160 stat,hypertech programmer,3.42 gears,gms maf,maf translator plus,ls1 driveshaft.

Re: Just installed my 3.42 gears in my 96 vert.

Thought would update on my latest track trip..last trip had 2.73 ,didn't have my magnaflow catback and didn't have nittos.

As a comparison last year best run was a 14.96 at 94 or 93 something.have to find the slip and 2.38 60ft on street tires.
This time got a 14.40 with a 2.34 60ft at 95.33 mph.
So figure on that run the nittos didn't really come into the equation so the increase in et had to be the gears thinking like 4 tenths and rest catback maybe.I did lean it out some som maybe 3 tenths for gears and rest catback and simple tuning with my maft translator.

Car is 96 vert.mods now are maft,cold air,holley air filter,airfoil,ile bellow,hpp tuning not in,160 stat,slp fan switch,magnaflo catback,3.42 gears.

Thought did pretty good all my runs were in the 14.35 with a 2.18 60ft to 14.43 tops.A lot better than last time. And never did heat up the nittos this time just drove them like street tires.Thats why 60fts aren't as good as they could be and car needs a stall I think to get better 60fts.

Track is at 1900 elevation think it was around 75 degrees but we also had a strong headwind that think reallly slowed me down. Most cars were running slower than normal.

Re: Just installed my 3.42 gears in my 96 vert.

I'm also installing the same set up as you did right now.
I ran 14.2 @ 99 with 2.73's muffler and kn. 2.17 60'
I'll post after I get it done and run it again.I going to get a tune also so just seeing what the gears do will be hard.

I set the backlash to .010 and I'm going to set the pinion to 15 inch lbs. with whatever the stock gears came with for a pinion shim.Any pointers.

Re: Just installed my 3.42 gears in my 96 vert.

I had speed shop owner /buddy set it up for me..think it was around .008 or .010 something like that. Not sure about the other thing. They seem to work good thats all I car about and don't seem to have any whine.Thats another reason went with 3.42 gm gears and 3.73 would be winding it up quite a bit on the highway even with the overdrive.

I am very happy with my 3.42s.Next mod is nice stall.

I took out my gms maf today think it might be screwing up my tune and maybe mph.My mph is only 95 and thats about 97 corrected for altitude.

Seems a bit low.Try some runs next time with stock maf. I am a vert though and they are heavier than normal z so that accounts for some of the mph too. Also don't have any big mods yet.

Re: Just installed my 3.42 gears in my 96 vert.

For those interested, there are a few good sites on the net that instruct you on how to swap gears, set up backlash, etc.

http://www.superstallions.com/tech/d...ars/gears.html

This site looks like it's for a Mustang but the basics are the same! I'm debating on whether or not I will set mine up when I get my new gears!

You should sell off your Hpp, GMS maf, and maf translator. Those are some expensive mods that add no hp. I would get rid of them and get some headers then you might break in to the 100mphs.

Re: Just installed my 3.42 gears in my 96 vert.

I need the hpp to program for my 3.42 gears. Also its handy for fan temps and shift points, moving rev limiter..tuning usually doesn't work from it but if you have enough octane available it can.We only have 92 here.

The maft is a pretty good way to tune fuel and spark, not as good as an laptop editing program but still useful none the less. The gms maf jury is out on it.I have taken it off for now and will try some runs on my tazzo vpc as track is closed for season.I thought it gave a good gain on my 97 ta that I had but it seems to slow down the 96 vert at least it did untuned.
I was running the gms at track this last time.

I didn't run it at the track the time before that but also didn't have the catback ,gears or nittos on the car.The car best 94mph with stock maf and the other mods listed. This time with gms maf it only ran 95 with catback and other mods listed.Still maybe all I can get is a 95 with my mods at my track with its elevation..1900 feet .Car is pretty heavy too.
I agree headers would pick the car up for sure.
