Intermittent loss of 3rd and 4th.

Ok guys my 4L60E that was rebuilt about 26k ago is now giving me fits.
Last nite it had no 3rd or 4th gear, shut it down let it sit for a bit and then drove home with no issues. Today it will be fine for one run up through the gears and then come to a stop and 1st and 2nd are fine but once it shifts to 3rd it just revs up.
Anybody have a clue why I sometimes have 3rd and 4th and sometimes not?

you've probably got a cracked piston in the forward drum or the seal is going bad and only slightly sealing when cold. At any rate, the 3-4 clutches are probably smoked now as they are the weakest part of the whole tranny unless beefed up. Check your fluid level while idling hot in park. Also use a white cloth or paper towel and wipe the stick down and look at the color or the paper towel. If theres a lot of gray material on it, shes burning up. Last but not least, and all telling, put the stick in again and pull it out and take a wiff of it. If it stinks like burnt marshmallows or such, shes fu(ked. If the fluid is any other color than pinkish red, you have issues, and changing your fluid WILL NOT in any way shape or form help your situation. So dont do it, it will only shorten the life of an already malfunctioning transmission. Hear this and believe it people. Fluid changes are preventative maintenance, not a solution to an already existing problem, so STOP wasting your money!

Wonderful.
Yep its got a slight burnt smell to it, although its still nice and pink with no gray in it.
Oh well, time to pull it back out and find out if A&A will do anything with it.

Turbo 350.........

if its still pink, you may have caught it in time. sometimes you can just repair that drum and put new clutches/steels and just put it back together. they may have just patched your tranny the first time, and now the clutches are gone. or they just suck, and cant build a 4L60. I personally like building them. You can always ship it to me and Ill hook it up for ya

They just suck I guess..... supposedly all new parts went in there and it worked great till saturday nite.
26k and I was very happy with it......thinking of going with a built 700r4 with a manual valvebody cause I sure like having that overdrive gear.
