I need some help with choosing a clutch setup...
OK, basically the car is almost stock, (mods in sig) and I need a new clutch setup that's affordable. For the last couple months I've searched for any info I could find on LT1 clutch setups and have a decent idea of what I need, but I'd like some advice on a few things...
I'm thinking I'm going to buy a Valeo clutch kit from Autozone or something comparable...My understanding is that these kits come with the LT4 PP, a throwout bearing and a pilot bearing, (or bushing?), and a clutch disc. Now, I know that the pressure plate is fine but what about the throwout bearing and pilot bearing/bushing? I've heard that you can use the square throwout bearing from a 'Vette and it's stronger, but where would I get that from and is it worth the extra trouble? Then I've heard that it's not good to use a pilot bearing and that I should stick with a bushing...Any truth behind that and if so should I run a Kevlar one? I've heard they are the best...As far as the disc that comes with the kit...Is it even worth running? I wasn't planning on it and am thinking of getting a McLeod 7,500 disc, (or whatever is the most aggressive single disc they make). I would consider other clutch discs but I haven't really been able to find any clutch discs from other manufacturers unless you buy their entire kit...I also want to buy a new flywheel...Ideally I'd want an aluminum one but for the sake of savings I think I could take the extra weight of a billet steel unit...What do you guys think would be a good flywheel? I definetly want to have the motor spin up quicker for heel-toe downshifts....And when I get a flywheel how does it have to be balanced??? What about an adjustable master cylinder? Would I have to worry about things not working right w/o one?
My car is a daily driver so I need a setup that will be able to survive stop and go traffic, (and all the slipping that goes along with that). I've heard that some clutches, (like Spec), don't really like to be slipped and in a daily driver they will wear out very quick. For the forseable future the car would maybe get a H/C setup with all boltons and supporting mods but probably nothing beyond that... That being said, I want a setup that grabs hard and can live up to more power if it ever comes...And something that can take some abuse and last awhile...Basically something that would be a very noticeable upgrade from stock. If I were to have a goal for what I'd use the car for besides as a DD it would be for autox, roadcourse and aggressive street driving more so than a drag setup though it will see some passes on the strip...If my main concern was drag racing I'd be getting a street twin....
As far as tranny fluid what would you guys recommend? I've heard not to run synthetics in a T-56...Something about the synchros not liking it...And also what kind of clutch fluid would be best to run? I hope I'm not forgetting anything...
Anyway, if you made it this far I thank you for the help....I've been researching for months but it seems as if I can never find a general consensus on anything...I'm going to be putting in the clutch myself so I really want to make sure I don't screw up buying the parts and more importantly when I put the thing in.
