i hear a clunking noise when i make a complete stop
recently a few days back i got my motive 373 gears installed at a professional shop that specializes installing gears, and today when driving when i make a complete stop i hear a slight clunk noise coming from the back, the noise isn't really loud, just a little noise (clunk), sounds like it coming from the rear end, otherwise the car drives well, no noise when acceleration, just when i make a complete stop i hear that noise? any ideas what this could be? could be my driveshaft? i have a steel one? would i need a aluminum driveshaft? or would this little clunk be normal for a 373 gear? this is my first car with a 373 gear, any ideas? thanks

The shop either has the backlash set too tight, or the put the wrong weight of fluid in the rear. I had the same problem with my gears when I did the install because I installed 85w140, soon as I changed the fluid with a lower weight it was gone. The auburn posi's we have in there don't like 140 and don't respond well to it. They are very temperamental. Anyways, put some 75w90 in there instead and I bet it goes away.

I would say its the backlash set too high, we had a car in my school that was doing the same exact thing. They tore into it found out that the backlash was at about .18, put some shims in and problem solved.

if backlash is the problem wouldn't it cause whining while accelrating and crusing at speeds? my gears are quiet while accelrating and crusing at normal speeds, yes theres a slight whine when deaceleration i know thats a common whine with bigger gears, but just when i make a complete stop i hear that clunk noise..maybe my driveshaft

well today i replaced the torque arm bushing in my camaro and i drove the car and it still clunks when i stop 
u joints are good, it has to be the gear? but it only clunks when i make a stop, its quiet when i accelerate, only when i stop it clunks?

shake your car back & fourth, mine does it while turning, i t hink its my Pan Hard bar, I have a cheap one with end links & when I shake my car side to side it makes a clunk, when do slow turns it clunks just like that.

my clunks over bumps and under a hard acceleration! also when i am flooring it and i shift it feels like the rearend is slipping. i will be completely off the clutch and the rpms are moving up but the car isnt pulling. ive been having pinion seal problems and right now i dont have gm additive for limited slip but i do have some type of additive in there. im about to put 4.10s in it with a new pinion bearing hoping thats my problem....i need help.

Seriously guys, try changing the fluid. It only costs about 10-15 bucks and that was the only thing that was making mine clunk as I said before. And when I say it was clunking, it was pretty violent. Just make sure you have the posi additive and use 75w90 gear oil.
