I CANT stop misshifting even with a pro 5.0 shifter! I NEED a rocket scientest HELP!!
I CANT stop misshifting even with a pro 5.0 shifter! I NEED a rocket scientest HELP!!
My tranny came down 4 times and was then replaced. All because of missing 3rd gear. I went 1st-2nd-1st about 5 times before the tranny was replaced.
After the new tranny went in (under warranty thank god) I said ill try to be more careful so I went with a pro 5.0 shifter so it could provide more insurance against misshifts.
So far I misshifted once (about 10 minutes ago and I am P.I.S.S.E.D. ).
Now I KNOW theres definetly a driver error but I cant stop misshifting. I read everything there is to read about 'how to position your hand on the shift ****' ... 'how you should try to aim at something when shifting'...etc etc..
I shift really fast. Im not the fastest guy shifting out there but I am one of the sloppy-est and Ill admit it.
I wish I never bought a manual for this reason, and I wish I could convert to automatic but that will cost me too much money and that I cant afford.
Is there anything out there that could help? I tried researching for so many things but could not find anything that could be of help. I even tried to see if I could redesign the "skipshift" light so I can make it come on when racing to avoid the misshifts (in other words, make the skipshift light lock unwanted gears when racing) but I found out that it cant be done as I could only lock 2nd gear and not 1st so I could still go 1-2-1 .
As of now Im trying to find a much more advanced shifter that could help. Maybe call NASA and have them make one for me ..
Please help!!!! I WILL buy an aftermarket shifter for $500 or even more if it guarantees no misshifts. Ill do anything I can to prevent this problem financially as I have no more ideas.
I have the stock shifter, lous short stick, and the Pro 5.0 shifter now but nothing is really saving my *** here..
Help! Please! My cam is going in and my warranty will soon be removed if this tranny goes down I will be in big trouble!

Slow down. Feel your way through each shift. In time, shifting will become second nature and you will be able to step up the pace of the shifting. Soon enough you'll be comfortable with power shifting.
Seriously, you've got to walk before you run.
Heck, I drove 18 speed transport trucks back in the day, and I can tell you that every vehicle feels a bit different and every one takes a very special little something to finesse into gear smoothly all the time.
SO DON"T GIVE UP!

I don't know about the Pro 5.0, but with my Hurst shifter I don't need to think about it. I don't need to aim, or hold my hand a certain way. The shifter just wants to go to third on its own. At most maybe just push slightly out right as you push it up. Maybe start slow or practice while sitting still...
its kinda hard to miss 3rd with a pro5.0 its on of the best shifters out there. I would just slow down i guess. Take your time and watch the shifter. Do it with the car running but not driving. Go thru the gears about 50 times. Maybe that will help
When you shift 2 - 3
Do not close your fist on the shifter
Tuck your elbow in
Then push the shifter up and away, the spring will guide it into 3rd for you and if it doesn't then there is something wrong with the spring tension.
Try that a couple of times, then modify to suit your own personal tastes. I had to teach my kid the same way, cause he was directing the shift with his hand closed on the **** and was forever screwing up the 2 - 3 shift.
Hope this helps

I had the same problem with 3rd from time to time. I found that
seat postion made a big improvement. Get in the seat and with the car in 3rd move the seat forward until you have a slight bend in your arm keep your arm comfortable but straight. It could be that your seatted for comfort to the wheel but a bit over extended for shifting. It worth a try and it's free.

What "LWM" said is very true. You shouldn't have to "find" 3rd gear for the car..........the shifter should "find" its way there with a light push up and out of 2nd (unless, like others have mentioned, the spring tension is not set correctly and the shifter is not being pulled over hard enough to center itself).
I remember with my old '96 Sunfire, I did a 1-2-1 shift a couple times getting on the highway, and I think it had a little to do with "speed shifting" and me forcing the shift (trying to be quick) and it would miss 3rd gear. As long as I was just lightly guiding the shifter toward 3rd, it would always go in no problem (except a couple times it would be very difficult to put into 3rd, but I think it was because of the higher mileage and the syncros starting to wear out).
Maybe you should have the shifter (spring) checked for proper tension/adjustment. Otherwise, practise more on your shifts before you start speed shifting. Your time is free, a transmission is not (or engine, if you over-rev it too much!).

There's no method to shifting... it's an acquired skill. Just practice slow. Then start going faster. There's really nothing to it. Although I have a B&M a really close friend of mine has a pro 5.0 and although it has a weird angle it still "finds" third. The spring tension will center the stick once it comes out of second so straight up brings you into third. And you should be able to tell if you went into first or third BEFORE you bring the clutch out.
