how wide are stock rear ends?
how wide are stock rear ends?
Just like it says, how wide are our stock rear ends, i want to put a 9 inch in there, but i can afford a moser, so im thinking im gonna get one out of a truck and fab it all up myself, just need to know the width before i dive into this
Re: how wide are stock rear ends?
I think he means the physical width between the wheel hub flanges. Look at the dimensioned drawing on the Strange web page, page 65 of their catalog:

It shows:
3rd Gen - 61.72"
4th Gen - 64.72"
I doubt you are going to save any money, fabbing it up from an old truck rear. You will end up having the axle assembly narrowed or widened, which requires new axles. It is unlikely the truck came with a limited slip carrier, so get a new carrier or a spool. The gear ratio might not be exactly what you wanted, so add new gears, and a complete bearing rebuild kit. Now make sure the typical problem area, the weld of the axle tubes to the center housing is beefed up. Cut all the old brackets off your stock raxle - left shock/panhard rod/LCA mount, both spring perches, and right shock/LCA mount - and weld them accurately to you "fabbed" truck rear. Then fab up or transfer the caliper mounting plates, with the hardware for the e-brake cables. Then design and fab a torque arm mount... even the Moser one isn't inspiring.

Good luck!
