How to tell if clutch is going..
How to tell if clutch is going..
What's the best way to tell if your stock clutch is going south? To be honest, it hasn't missed a shift once, I never smell anything, and the fluid is good. It just doesn't seem like the clutch pedal is as pressurized as it once was.
The clutch, again, is stock and has about 68K on it. Let me know something. Thanks in advance.

Re: How to tell if clutch is going..
When it starts slipping more than it usually does. I know mine is pretty much done cuz when I dump the clutch at 4 grand it just slips. I do have drag radials but it should still spin them.

"More" than usual?? As far as I know, it never does. To "slip" means to miss shifts/gears right? I know a fair deal about cars but with trannies I know next to nothing.
One more question, on clutch fluid, the reservoir cap says to fill up to "plastic step" but what does that mean? The plastic line on the inside??

Slip is where the clutch doesn't fully grab. You normally slip the clutch some when you first take off to make for a smoother start. When it starts slipping more thats when it is starting to go.
Re: How to tell if clutch is going..
one way to test it is to go 35mph and put the car in 6th gear, give it some gas, if the motor lugs itself, the clutch has life left, if the clutch slips...you know it is on its way out. My stock clutch lasted 115K miles..i broke the disc in half just about

ahah you would... lol...
But i have heard, if you are goign 45 - 50 Mph in 6th gear, then FLOOR the pedal. if you see your RPM's going up quicker than your speed, then you clutch is slipping... and time for a new one.
any ideas on what you want to go with once it does go out?

Appreciate all replies though. I guess the one I have is still good to go.

Bow94z is right. Go in to the higher gears (5th or 6th) and bring the rpms to about 3500, than give it WOT. This is one of the easiest ways to see if your clutch is slipping, and WILL be one of the first signs that it is slipping.
Re: How to tell if clutch is going..
If you want to catch the clutch early before it gets bad enough to slip all the time, push in the clutch, stick it in fourth, stab the gas, and dump the clutch . It should grab very quickly. I would hate to let my clutch get so bad that it'll slip on it's own even after it's fully engaged, meaning cruising along and stabbing the gas as opposed to launching the car and getting some slip.
