How strong is a 9 bolt??

Like the title says. Are they better than the 10 bolt? Will they fit in the newer f-bodies. I read it has a 9" ring gear which is even biger than a 12 bolt.

Re: How strong is a 9 bolt??

It's not a 9 bolt, it's a 9". I don't know how many bolts it has, but I think it's 12.

I've heard of 9" rear ends holding 1500hp without a problem.

The F-body 10-bolt has a 7.5" ring gear. GM has another 10 bolt which is 8.5" (78-87 G-bodies, and probably several other cars).

And yes, the 9" is much better than the 10-bolt, but it's expensive. The GM 12-bolt (which, IIRC, has an 8.8" ring gear) will hold almost as much as a Ford 9" and costs a fair bit less.

There is ofcoarse a 9 bolt rear end that came in thirdgens, it's a lot stronger then a 10 bolt 7.5" in the 4th gens.

Are you for real, or just making that up!? I've NEVER heard of a 9-bolt, except in cases where 9" / 9-bolt have been mistakenly reversed.

No there are 9bolts. they came in the IROC camaro and the Trans Am GTA i beleive. I was just wondering because the ring gear is 9" so it should be strong in retrospect, right. I'm just trying to find an alternative to the $2500 rears.

Re: How strong is a 9 bolt??

So the ring gear on a 9-bolt is 7.75", only slightly larger than the 7.5" 10-bolt found in 4th gen F-bodies.

Re: How strong is a 9 bolt??

According to this link 4th gens have a 7.625, so the difference is even less than when comparing to a 7.5. Maybe something else is stronger?

Re: How strong is a 9 bolt??

If you want a strong rear end, you need a GM 12-bolt or a Ford 9".

Re: How strong is a 9 bolt??

There is a reason that the 9-bolt from borg-warner only lasted a year.....its a low quality piece of sh-t.
