How much will gears knock off in the 1/4?

I know this is about a Stang but please bear with me. Look at my mods in the sig. I am planning gears soon. I am wondering how many tenths and mph, 3.73, 3.90, 4.10, and 4.30 gears will give me in the 1/4 mile with my current mods? 3.73 gears are great for top speed and a daily driver. 4.30 gears are best for the dragstrip. I was just wondering what the difference would be between all these gear ratios at the strip. Anybody know? Thanks in advance.

it would help a lot if you would post what transmission you are runing and what the ratios are, Also what gears are in it now?? it also depends on the redline of your motor and the size tire you are runing. As you can see it is not a simple question of what number is better.

not a simple question by far
but i could see up to a .5 increase even though that seems optimistic
most i think see .3 or so on f-bodies iirc but then again, yours is a mustang and i heard those like gears a lot

T45 5-speed. 3.37, 1.99, 1.33, 1.00 and .67. 3.27s. 6000 rpm redline. 255/50R16 BFG DRs inflated from 12-20 psi. 5000 rpm HP peak.

i think i'd go with 4.10s, jmho
also, be sure you don't keep "covering all the bases"
the mods will have a fit

I had 430 gears in my 89 stang with a world class t5. It was alot of gear on the freeway but not that bad in town. I ran 12.80 with gt40 intake and heads and a wolverine cam(wg1087).

I'm no mathmatician but here is the math to do...
If you make your best power at 6000 rpm redline, you want to cross the finish line as close to that # as possible.
If you're crossing at 5000 with the 3.27 gears you'll need 20% more gear to get to that point(5000 x1.20+6000).
Multiply 3.27 by 1.20 would get you 3.924 (or 3.90) gears. This doesnt answer the actual question asked but it will tell you how to get the most out of gears!

My max power is at 5000 rpm. My redline is at 6000 rpm. I think I cross the line at 98-100 mph at this altitude. 93 mph is 5000 rpm in 4th gear with 4.10s. 89 mph is 5000 rpm in 4th gear with 4.30s. 103 mph is 5000 rpm in 4th gear with 3.73s.

Re: How much will gears knock off in the 1/4?

you going to do eventual heads/cam?
if you do, it would probably be beneficial to get the numerically higher gear than you would stock since most cams anybody gets are the ones that rev a bit higher and in general have a higher powerband

I will probably go with a blower or nitrous instead of heads/cam (if I get some real money to play with) unless the motor is torn down anyway.

Re: How much will gears knock off in the 1/4?

get a 4.10. these modular engines love to rev and respond well to a gear. if your gonna do a blower then ide say go no higher than a 3.73 (preferably 3.55). but for a stock motor 2v ide go 4.10.
