How much fluid is needed for tq conv. and shift kit install?

The converter is already full of fluid, and we're having a guy install a trans-go along with a new filter. So how much fluid is it gonna take to do this swap? I bought a gallon thinking that would be enough to fill er back up, but then realized if the pan is coming off I'm probably gonna need a lot more. So how much should I get? I'm using Dexron - III btw. Also should I wait until the tranny is back in until I fill it back up, or do it after the pan is back on? I know it's gotta be lighter without fluid, every little bit helps.

In my old A3 setup with 2 coolers and a normal depth pan I would need 13 quarts. The more fluid you have, the cooler it stays.

oh I forgot that....there's a B&M 24,000 GVU cooler in the mix too. I guess I better go buy a couple more gallons. It's best to check the fluid level with the car running right? Does it really matter if it's warmed up.

No I'm just using the stock pan for now since I don't have a filter that will drop down into an aftermarket one and I already bought the replacement. I think I'll be good with atleast 3 gallons maybe 4. Figuring 4 quarts to a gallon and theres 12 quarts in a case = my 3 gallons(for you lazy math types).

What about checking the fluid level? With car running, up to temp or just running?
