Question How do you check alignment between T56 and Engine?

I know how to do it if the bellhousing has a round hole at the trans input, like a Hayes for smallblocks. You just put a magnetic dial indicator on the flywheel and measure to that hole while spinning the engine, with clutch and trans removed. But for our T56 bellhousings, there is no hole to measure to. Is a special fixture required, or something?

My TO bearing seems to only have lasted a few thousand miles, so I suspect my new engine block is not exactly like my old one, causing misalignment between the trans and engine. When I install my Mcleod Bellhousing I want to get it right.

Could the front cover of the trans be removed and used as a fixture to do this? How hard would that be?

Well, I've searched the web pretty thoroughly, and read the T56 manual, with no answers. I'm starting to think I'll need to make a precision fixture that can bolt to the bellhousing if I want to verify alignment.

Got an answer from the 'Mcleod SFI....' thread, adding info here for reference:

It's a plate that bolts to the bellhousing with a center register hole in place of the transmission face. That way you would have a way to register the bellhousing. I would use 8702-5 becasue it is the blank cap and above all the least expensive.
