How can I get the ring gear off the carrier?

I need to swap my ring gear to a new posi carrier. I don't see how I could press it off since the ABS reluctor wheel is in the way (unless I partially start the bolts and press on them, but I don't know if that is a good idea). I don't have a press anyway so I would have to take it somewhere.

I was told if I put the whole thing in the oven at about 400* for 20 minutes the ring would expand enough to "fall off". Is that right, or does anyone know of a better way?

Thanks
Dustin

The ring gear itself just unbolts from the carrier, and the reluctor stays with the carrier, no? Or does the new posi not have the reluctor wheel on it, so you need to take it off too? I don't see what the problem here is?! If you're working with the factory 10-bolt, there are (surprise, surprise) 10 bolts holding the ring gear onto the carrier, but they are left hand thread instead of the standard right hand, so to take them out you have to turn them clockwise. Once all the bolts are out, there is nothing holding the rear gear on, so it should come off the carrier easily.

I already took out the 10 reverse threaded bolts. The ring gear is a press fit on the carrier. It does not come "right off" once the bolts are out. I also need to swap the reluctor ring to my new carrier.

Did you take apart a 10-bolt where the ring "fell" off after the bolts came out? I rebuilt a 12 bolt for my Dad's '68 and we had to press the ring gear off that carrier also. I don't have a press and the reluctor wheel blocks any good spot to press from anyway on this rear. I was looking to see if there is another way. I will try heating it up this weekend.

Ah crap, then sorry dude, I'm not sure?! I did the gears in my car last year, but my dad is a mechanic and did most (all) the work, so I can't say for sure, but I don't remember him having trouble getting the ring gear off? I certainly didn't think they were press fitted to the carrier!? I honestly thought it basically pulled off nice and easy once it was unbolted.

Well, I guess this one's still open for suggestions.........

Cool

Put a few of the bolts partially threaded back into the ring gear and take a rubber mallet to the bolts. That should be enough to loosen the ring gear from the carrier. If that doesn't work, use a drift/hammer to the to bolts heads and work around in a circular pattern.

Tapp the ring in a downward motion with a hammer with the bolts out. Becarefull not to damage the abs ring.

I thought about that but I was worried I would mess up the threads in the ring gear. I guess it will be ok if I am carefull.

Thanks for the help

this may sound crazy but you could take a board and set it on the floor of your shop and take the carrier with the ring gear facing down and pick it up and slam it on the board. The board will keep from messing up the bearing surfaces and it creates a slide hammer effect. Its amazing how well it works on stuff.

Thanks for all of the help. I ended up backing the bolts out a little and using them to tap it off with a rubber mallet. After that I put the ring gear in the oven for a minute and it expanded enough to drop right on the new carrier.

Thanks again
