How bad is a leaking rear main?

I think my rear main may be leaking. I just replaced the clutch over the summer and pulled out the old rear main seal, and put in a new one from Napa. I have oil coming from around the back of engine by the oil pan and around the slave cylinder and inspection cover. How could this leak after putting one in just a few months ago? Is it possible it could be something else? I don't want to have to pull the tranny again if I don't have to.

Valve covers? Intake manifold? Or maybe you didn't get it installed correctly....?

If you really have a rear main leak, you want to fix it before oil gets to the clutch. Once it does, you are going to be replacing it again.

If your confident in your work on the seal i would check the back of the intake first before you tear into it.

I'll check the back of the intake tomorrow. I am pretty sure that I installed the seal correctly, pryed old one out with a screwdriver, and gently tapped in the new one around the edges until flush.

Any idiot can put in a rear main seal. I doubt that's your problem unless you got a defective one, or you go some dirt between the crank and the seal and its leaking from there. I'd definitely check the back of your intake, especially near the passenger side. That will kill your clutch too, because it will leak down into your bellhousing area. When I changed my clutch, I found that my rear main AND my intake were leaking (what a kick in the pants). I knew my intake was leaking already, though, so I did that first.
