High Horsepower Auto Tranny???

I'm having a few issues with my current tranny builder, when I say a few I mean 6 trannys last season. He doesn't seem to be building them to hold. I changed my rear end from a 2.59 to a 3.45 this winter, I've been told this will help the tranny. My question is will my 700R4 last for a while or have I out driven it's possibilities? Who does good 700R4 rebuilds that will hold or will I have to go to another tranny? If so OD is a must for my daily driver.

I'm running a 396ci with a 250 hp shot of nitrous and I'm planning on going forced induction soon.

Thanks for the input.

The only OD automatic I know of that will stand up to what you are doing is a built 4L80 (OD version of the TH400).

Your right Rich, I have broken everything I put behind my motor and now am building a full roller t400 with Gear Vendors OD unit. Heavy, but tough.

Same here, but I haven't bought the GV yet. As you say, it's heavy and it's not cheap but I think it's the only really proven high hp approach.

The person to speak to about built proof trannys is Carl Rossler at Rossler Transmissions. He stands behind his trans and they are tough! I have owned three of his trans in the past and none of them have broken. I used to have problems with finding a tranny guy that new how to build one strong enought and after my 4th blown 4L60E I called Rossler and he built me a killer 4L60E that lasted until I went to a Turbo 400.

His new turbo 400 ProMod trans is holding up to over 2500 horsepower without a glitch and laying down 6's.

Give him a call you will not regreat it because it will solve all your tanny blues. Heres his link:

Try Art Carr. I just purchased one of their 700R4s that are capable of handling 700+ horse.

They're running a special for $1,899.00 That includes the trans and a custom built torque converter. The core charge is $250. My total bill was around $2,300 (core and shipping included). I know it's expensive but it seems to be the best bang for the buck for a trans/converter combo. You also get a 12 month warranty. My biggest complaint would be how long I waited for the trans to get here. I ordered it on Dec. 29th and didn't receive it until this past Tuesday. That's like five weeks. But I guess you gotta wait it out if you want a quality product. My mechanic called me earlier to let me know he installed the trans. He said the car seems to be running strong and that the 2nd to 3rd shift hits real hard. Hopefully I'll be able to pick it up tomorrow. Good luck with whichever decision you make.

Don't know anything specific about Art CArr. But a good converter to handle the kind of hp you get from a hot 396 with a 250hp nitrous shot in a heavy car is gonna be in the $1,000 range by itself. So, $1,899 seems too cheap. Either the tranny or the converter, or both, will be inadequate for the combo being discussed.

I am not sure how much HP you are running but I just got my trans rebuild by www.dynotechperformance.com in NJ and they claim to have many 650 Flywheel cars running these trans with now problems what so ever for over 2 years. Eric at Dynotech also told me that they have a Vette with a 4l60E runing in the High 9s at 3600# with no problems at all.

I got my trans last weekend and I am very please with it. I was gonna go with the Rossler but with shipping to NJ and install prices, it would have been like 3800.00 bucks when done. I ended up paying under 2500 bucks installed from Dynotech.

Thanks,
Claude

It's been done, but not too often. I looked into it but there isn't too much info out there and I didn't want to experiment. As you know, the 4L80 is the OD version of the TH400 so it ought to work. It is pretty bulky and a built version will be in the $3-4K range, from what I could find out. I wouldn't try to control it electronically if I were doing it, reverse manual VB would be the way to go.

Just got off the phone with Carl Rossler and he gave me a price of $2695 plus an upgraded pan $119 plus core $400 plus shipping $100 Total: $3314. And thats only if the parts inside the core are good. That gear vendors unit isn't looking all that bad anymore.
