HELP! Wierd rattle from trans!
HELP! Wierd rattle from trans!
Hey guys, winter modfest 05 is complete, and has been for about 900 miles now. Among the modifications, I had my trans gone through at D&D performance, replaced all the bearings and synchros, steel shift forks, blah blah blah. I upgraded to the new slave cylinder, and added an LS6 clutch kit with new flywheel. I got it all installed, and it works perfect, and shifts like a dream. I've only got on it a few times but for the most part I've been really easy on it. However, today I noticed this really wierd rattle coming from the engine or trans. It gets really loud if I put my ear by the shifter (Pro 5.0 with Lou's SS if it matters) and it only does it in neutral, idling. What could it be?! It wasnt there before, and everything still works perfectly. Shifts are nice and smooth, 1-6th and reverse all work great.

Do you live on a gravel road or drive on gravel? We were ready to remove the tranny from my buddies and found that some rocks had lodged in between the tranny and the floor.Sounds crazy and like a freek accident but I guess it could happen to someone else too.
Re: HELP! Wierd rattle from trans!
Did you replace the dual mass flywheel with an aftermarket solid one? The dual mass flywheel is there to reduce the rattling and vibration inside the T56. Nearly everyone who replaces theirs with an aftermarket wheel experiences the noise you may be referring to. If the shop used a lube like TransGel to assemble your tranny then it may have taken this long to disperse and allow the rattling. Or maybe not.

No, I used the LS6 flywheel that came with the kit. Oddly enough the trans didnt make a sound today. I will be replacing the LS6 clutch kit soon, the only reason I used it is because I scored it brand new for $100, and figured that would help save moolah for other things and I would replace it when its needs to be. I don't mind pulling the trans, I can do it by myself in no time at all. Getting it back in a helping hand helps, but even then that only takes 45 min including getting the new flywheel and clutch in. Air tools and torque wrenches rule!
