help! separating t56 from bellhousing?

I know I saw this post before, with the same problem, but couldn't find it. I have my lt1 and 6sp out(1995). Now I am trying to separate the trans. I pulled down on the clutch fork and felt it disengage. after getting the trans bolts out it will only separate 1/2 to3/4 of an inch and thats it. Looking thru the gap it looks like the clutch fork is just barely touching the ears of the throwout bearing(is it supposed to completely clear it,once pulled down?). Is this whats causing my problem? I don't see how I can pull down the fork anymore because its hitting the inside of the bellhousing. I finally got so pissed off I put the bolts back in and walked away.! It doesn't help that its FRICKIN 110 in my garage. Damn I hate Texas! waaayy to frickin hot all the frickin time!!Its supposed to be fall!!!
