Help with rear seal on LT1 T56

I just put my transmission in after doing the A4 to M6 swap. I drove it yesterday and it is leaking tranny fluid out of the rear of the tranny. I don't know if the guy that rebuilt it forgot to put a rear seal in it or not. When I'm looking at the rear of the tranny, the only thing I can see is a rubber cone looking piece that fits over the drive shaft. It is definitely leaking out of that spot though. I bought a rear seal today and was wondering where it goes. It's not like my A4 and was wondering if someone had a pic or something. I really appreciate it guys.

It sounds like you are describing the extension housing oil seal. The rubber part that extends out is a dust seal. Some replacement seals don't have the dust seal. You just pry out the old one and hammer in the new one.

There is also a sealing ring on the output shaft inside the extension housing. It looks simular to a large O-ring and is the last thing that goes on the output shaft. You might be able to see if it is there after you pry out the oil seal but I'm not sure.

Also make sure your yoke doesn't have any pits or grooves in it as that can let oil leak past the oil seal. If the yoke looks okay I would replace the oil seal and see if that helps before trying anything else.

So, pry out the dust seal? I need to pull the drive shaft out and see if I can see the seal. My A4 has it on the very end of the tranny, but the M6 doesn't look that way. I will look at it when I get more time. I appreciate the help.

Take your driveshaft out. Pry out the seal. The dust seal and the oil seal are all one piece. Once the driveshaft is out you will see the part that seals to the driveshaft slip yoke if you look inside the dust seal. The seal goes in the end of the trans the same as your auto trans. Your new seal may look different than the one you have now. A lot of the replacement seals don't have the dust seal but they work fine. I'm at work so I don't have any part numbers but any parts store will have or can get the seal.

By the way. If you jack your car up from the rear you won't lose but a few drops of trans fluid.

I filled the transmission up from the hole where the shifter bolts to. I filled it until it came out of the fill hole. I have the seal up stairs and it just looks like a rear tranny seal. It doesn't have the dust seal. I will try to do this tomorrow (Sun) and see what I can figure out. I appreciate everything.

I don't know the part number, but I just went to Auto Zone and told the year and model. The seal they sold me was like $4 and it solved the problem. Thanks for the help guys.

Where exactly is the overflow located?

By overflow, do you mean the fill plug? If so, it's located about half-way up the transmission on the driver's side. If that's not what you mean, then I have no clue.

I may be wrong....

The filler plug on the side prenvent overfill. Once it reached the hole for the plug it will run out. Then it is full.

I replaced that rear seal and the thing still leaks. Not as badly, but it still leaks. Is there anything else that could cause them to leak out of the rear besides the rear seal?
