Help identify my muncie M22's origin

Hello. I have a M22 muncie with a date of 9/29/72, which I think means it went into a 73 model year car. 73 was the final year of the m22 and guessing that to be a fairly rare option, so it would be nice to know exactly where this thing came from.

What I've found says on top is stamped a partial vin. This one is 12R516388. I think the first 2 digits, 12 identify it as a chevy camaro. The VIN theory goes off track when you run into the R.

All I know otherwise, the case and tailshaft housing #s check out as 70-73 castings. It has a hurst shifter with no handle, so that's not useful for ID either.

Any muncie experts, or 2nd gen camaro numbers experts out there that can further enlighten me? There's a metal tag on the shift cover, but nothing I find tells me how to decode it.

Thanks!

I was looking at an old BBC book I have and in '73 they only came in Chevelles. The full size Chevys with the BB came only with the TH400. I suppose they could have come behind a small block.

Looking at the Camaro White Book, '72 was the last year for the BB and the last year the M22 could be ordered.

Thank you for the info, didn't know that. Does that exclude vettes? I'm suprised that you couldn't order an M22 Z28 in 73.

Can anyone point me in a direction here? I've googled the hewl out of this, and decoded it as far as I can. Any good restoration sites or forums?

Appreciate any advice!

Yea, according to the book, only M20 or M21 for '73 Camaros. I would think if a vette could be had with a BB, you could get an M22. I don't remember last year for BB vettes.
