Heavy Clunking Noise - Mechanic in Torrance, CA?

I have a 94 Z28 Auto. Occasionally my car makes a heavy clunk or thump when I either accelerate hard or do a semi quick start from stop. If I drive "safe and sane" I don't get the noise, but am worried when I have to step on it making a left turn or merging into traffic.

I don't know if that would be a tranny or differential issue. The first time I heard it (or felt it), I thought that I had just lost traction at startup over some pothole or something. But it has done it three or four times since.

I did have a minor accident two years ago that required my left axle to be replaced, but there was no damage to the differential at the time.

I don't think there is any way I am going to fix it myself, but I am new to the Torrance, CA area and was looking for some recommendations of places to take it to have it looked at and repaired.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Mike

Inspect your tranny mount; very common source of the symptoms you described and can easily be replaced in a driveway with a jack and jack stands.

Most likely the tranny mount. Very cheap and easy fix.

If not you can go to http://www.Haddadmotorsports.com. However it sounds like a broken tranny mount. Not a big deal to change.

Re: Heavy Clunking Noise - Mechanic in Torrance, CA?

Thank you for the quick replies OBE1 95Z28, Cmr0z28, blown383 (especially OBE1 95Z28 for initially pointing it out). I will take a look over the weekend.

How big of a gamble is it to put any miles on it prior to fixing it (like 40 miles)? I guess it would be tough to say without seeing it.

Thanks again!
