Hard to shift into first and reverse when cold.
Hard to shift into first and reverse when cold.
I've noticed that as the weather gets colder it is getting harder and harder to shift into first and reverse when the car is cold in the morning. I have to literally shove the shifter into gear with quite a bit of force. After driving for a while everything is perfectly normal. Is anyone else experiencing this? Will something other than Dexron III work better and lessen this annoyance?
Re: Hard to shift into first and reverse when cold.
Mine did the same thing last year, it had nothing to do with the shifter nor the tranny. It was the thing that makes sure the brake pedal is in before it lets you shift out of park. Pull the shift selection part of the consol (really easy, two bolts in the consol box and pull up on it, after removing the U clip on the shifter), then unplug the brake release thing. Worked like a charm after that.
Let me know if you need any help.

Re: Hard to shift into first and reverse when cold.
I usually pull mine into a higher gear first to get everything stopped inside the tranny and then grab either first or reverse. I am a bit older and got used to doing that in older transmissions when first wasn't synchronized. Works very well especially with reverse which I assume is straight cut.
Re: Hard to shift into first and reverse when cold.
Thanks, I'll try that. I believe reverse is synchronized on the T-56. There is no grinding or anything, just a lot of effort required. I'll check it out tomorrow morning and see what happens.
