Hard to get out of 4th (M6)

Well, on the way home from work today I took off pretty hard from a stop light, got to about 5k in 4th and let off the gas and used the engine to help slow me down........when I got to the next light, pressed in the cluth, and tranny would not go out of 4th.

Eventually worked it out (forced it).

Drove most way home with out using 4th.

Used 4th several times (closed to home), no probs.

Got in my hood, used 4th, cant get out.

Got home, disassembled shifter (stock), shifter moves freely put back together, forced out of 4th. Seem ok

What could possibly be causing this.

125k miles and car is starting to wear me out......

Just bought car several months ago, and have not changed it.

I bet that should be the first step huh?

Does it matter what type of ATF i use?

Is there a chance this could fix the problem?

How many miles are on the odo?
Above 120.000, some suggest to change the tranny fluid, and always use Dextron II-E or Dextron III regular ATF. The fluid capacity in the T56 is about 4 quarts.

A bent 3-4 shift fork could cause a sticking 4th gear. It can be replaced with an upgraded steel fork, but it requires the disassembly of the tranny.

Does the tranny come out fairly easy, or should I let the shop do it?

Dropping the tranny is not hard at all, just get someone to help you, the T56 is really heavy.
I would let the shop disassemble the tranny!

Will ramps in the front and jack stands on the rear axle get me enough room to drop the tranny.

Any special tool required to get to the bellhousing bolts?

Any idea how much this will set me back?

2 feet of extensions and some metric swivel sockets. You will have to get the car up high on jack stands to get the tranny out. Much easier to do it on a lift.

Is it possible with Jack stands in the back, and ramps in the front, as i do not have access to a lift.

Does everyone get fed up with their car at times?

This is not looking like a cheap fix, i have called several places around town.

If i bring in tranny.......$60 just to tell me what is wrong
$250 in labor for rebuild

And I am sure that parts are higher than Giraffe P****

I had a similar problem with my tranny (among many other problems). Anyway....got 4th gear stuck and ripped the tranny out for the 9th time. Turns out I sheared off the Synchro keys and they ended up on the bottom of the tranny. Here's a link to a service manual with exploded views http://shbox.com/1/t56_service_manual.pdf

While I'm here I'll post a question up

One of my cars is a 95 Z28 Convertible with 25,000mi on it. It has 8000mi on the motor and about 6000mi on the tranny. Long story short...the dealer screwed me on some tranny repair. I went from a tranny that had serious vibration with only 17,000mi on it to one that constantly throws itself out of 3rd gear ever since they installed it. I have replaced all the synchros in it (TWICE!), including the shift fork, and this still happens. Anyone have any ideas? BTW....with a B&M Ripper in there that really hurts!
