Question Guess this noise...

I just purchased a 1996 Trans Am, M6 with 93,xxx miles on it. There is a noise coming from the rear of the car that sounds like something is rubbing. It also tracks along with the RPMs...it doesn't get louder as the RPMs go up, but the noise picks up speed as if the rubbing part is spinning faster. The dealer did tell me there is some fluid seeping from the rear diff but the noise doesn't seem to be coming from the center of the car...more towards the driver side rear.

The driver side rear rim lip also has a spot about 1 inch that is bent in but the tire is seated on the rim and is not leaking air...I'm not sure if the rim itself is bent or if it's just the lip of the rim. The car doesn't shake as I would expect it would if the rim was bent. The car tracks straight so as far as I can tell the alignment is good.

I don't think the car sat for a long time, the guy at the dealership said he got tons of calls on the car...93k miles, M6, t-tops, leather, $4990...no wonder he got a lot of calls.

I don't have a clue what could be causing this...maybe it needs the diff cover removed, new gasket and fluid? Bent axle? Bent rim? Driveshaft?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hey Brian, Just stop by my house one day and I will take a look at it. Sounds like it could be and axel bearing... If so it's and easy fix.

Brian, great to see you bought another 4th gen. Take it by Seans place this weekend. Heck, he is always the one that diagnosed my car problems.
Post up some pics of the ride. Where did you get it from? I did just see a 4th gen rear with 3 channel abs and 4.10 gear for sale for $250obo. If you need it I can try and find it again.

Later,
Chris

How do you fix/replace an axle bearing? I think mine is going bad & I've never changed one out before.

I'll try to get some pictures up when I get a free minute. I probably won't be able to stop by Sean's place (even though I drive by it every day) until next week or after Christmas. Jennifer and I are going to her parents this weekend and next weekend is packed already as well.

I got the car in Ashland, OH. I found it on autotrader. It's a white '96 TA, M6, leather, t-tops, power everything. The interior is near perfect, the driver side bolster is slightly worn but that's the only thing with the interior. The body is not perfect, there's some spider webbing in the paint on the front and rear bumpers, a little rust in the rear fenderwell, and a couple of other nicks and scratches (but it's 12 years old, what do you expect?).

As soon as I get some pics of the car I'll e-mail them to you. By the way...I filled the tank yesterday and checked the mileage - 24.9 mpg!!! I never got mileage like that in either of the A4s I had before.

Later,

Brian

Gas mileage can be good with a M6 car and the highway. First time bringing my green one home I got 28MPG. In town sucked, just depends on how much you put your foot in it.
