Growling noise

Just before the transmission shifts at very light acceleration and when going around bends, not corners, I hear some growling noises coming from either the tranny or rear end. It's worse in cold weather for some reason and doesn't do it at all when accelerating with any type of force at all.

The car has 120,000 miles but has never been beat and is well maintained. Runs fine and shifts good for 120,000 miles, a little bit of slippage when the tranny gets real hot. I would assume it's a tranny issue but it sounds so much like it's coming from the rear of the car I'm not sure anymore.

The car has recently started to vibrate a little at idle like the tranny mount could possibly be due for a replacement. I intend to replace it anyway but could that be the source of this type of problem? If not any other ideas? Time for a tranny rebuild or is it the rear end?
