grinding from transmission or rear end??

My '95 z28 has been making clicking noises when I accelerate from a stop, it would just click once or twice then stop. It has a 4L60E automatic and GM Motive 3.73 gears with an SLP take-out posi.

Just last weekend at bristol dragway I noticed it clicking like crazy when I was slowing down, it sounded like having a baseball card stuck in a bike spoke, the clicking noise got slower as the car slowed down.

I jacked the back end of the car up a few days ago and turned the wheels by hand and didnt hear anything, I even started it up and let it go through the gears with the tires in the air and I couldnt hear anything.

Well, just 30 minutes ago I was pulling out of a parking lot and it clicked a few times like it always did in 1st gear, then I felt a slight vibration as if something was grinding on the car and it stoped when the car shifted out of 1st gear and continued on the highway at 60+mph. It seems more prounounced at low speeds in 1st gear though.

The rear end always had a slight whine when I lifted off the gas, it hasnt got any worse over the past year. So I haven't heard any new noises at highway speeds, but it does vibrate a lot worse than usual.

The transmission shifts great, it doenst slip at all. Every shift is firm, datamaster shows very little slippage between shifts.

Any idea what this could be? I'm heading to my dads shop on the way home from work. I'm gonna drop the transmission pan and the rear end cover and check both. I honestly cant tell what it is right now, just hopin someone else has some ideas before I head out there.

Re: grinding from transmission or rear end??

Check the driveshaft u-joints for worn needle bearings.

Moving to "Drivetrain"......

I had the same problem. I changed the u-joint and everything is fine now.
