Grinding T-56
Help!
Today I noticed my transmission making a wierd grinding noise when I downshift. It happens if say I downshift to 2nd gear to go around a turn. The transmission will make a wierd grinding sound, which goes away in a few seconds. It also happened once downshifting into 3rd gear and once actually upshifting to second.
Each time the sound comes, it goes away a few seconds later. It seems as if something is out of synch in the transmission and needs a few seconds to "catch itself." If I want to really slow down to slow pace and downshift I dont get the grind.
Know how if you try to downshift into a gear at speed the transmission gives a little bit of resistance? It seems that my grind accompanies the reistance.
Any ideas? I guess checking the fluid would be a start and I'm praying that the fix is as cheap as a few bottles of fluid.

My car does the same thing. I think it's the input shaft of the transmission. It speeds up when you downshift. I will be replacing the clutch in the next few months and replace the pilot bearing also, maybe that takes care of it. If it doesn't then it must be the input shaft bearing in the transmission (hope not). To replace that, the whole transmission needs to come apart, it opens from the back.
Let me know if you find out anything on this!
Thanks!

Maybe I should have specified that (on my car at least), the grinding happens while it is already in gear, not during the shifting. So when I am slowing down for a corner and disengage the clutch and then downshift, it makes a grinding noise when it's in the lower gear while I am slowing down. To me that must be the input shaft.

Hmmmm, that sounds like it makes sense. My problem sounds identical to yours. Let me know after you swap your clutch if it clears up the problem.
