grinding noise? Tranny or Clutch?

Hey guys I have a 98 Z28 M6 and Ive never heard or experienced a clutch going out on me. When I down shift into any gear when I let the clutch out the transmission grinds- its very little, but its like the gear isnt engaged all the way. Like when I'm almost stopped and trying to put it into first to go again the transmission will grind and sometimes a lot if im still moving. The clutch does have little slippage when im in the other upper RPM's when I shift fast. But Im not sure if the transmission is going out or If (im hoping) the clutch is just goiung out. The cars got 84,000 miles an im not sure how long ago the last clutch was replaced- or if it has been replaced. Any help and info. would be greatly appreciated. Thanx guys.
