Got flywheel resurfaced... is it supposed to be smooth?
Got flywheel resurfaced... is it supposed to be smooth?
I just got my flywheel resurfaced, and I have a feeling the guys who did it have never done this before. Anyways the flywheel is kinda rough, they didn't sand it down smooth, especially towards the outer edge. I already put in the flywheel, but now I'm wondering if its going to ruin my clutch. Also I couldn't get it totally clean with the brake cleaner, there was dirt stuck in the rought parts, will this cause a problem?
Any thought guys?

Should be smooth. A little rough is ok, it helps with grip, but if it looks like worn brake rotors, I'd pull it out, it will mess up your clutch. Slightly rough like they took some 400 grit sandpaper to it is fine....
Here is a pic of my flywheel out of my conquest.

That is what it should look like.
I have heard rumors about it not being a good idea to re-use these flywheels. Some say they're not meant to be resurfaced, others do it with no problems.

I had mine resurfaced and shimmed but the shim was bigger than the amount of material that was removed causing the clutch to not fully disengage and messing up the tranny. My advice would be to buy a new flywheel.

I am not sure what the correct surface finish should be but mine was pretty rough after being resurfaced. Flat, but rough. No problems with it yet and they should have shown up by nowif there were going to be any. It probably has 15k miles on it.
