Good old gear question
Good old gear question
For an A4 99 TA that now has 3.23's in it. I have heard mixed reviews that 3.23's are better for an A4 than 3.73's. I am about 50/50 on this. I have found in the searches that most people here like 3.73's but there hasn't been a comparision between the two gears. Most people just ask 3.73 or 4.10. What are your opions?
Re: Good old gear question
My opinion is that your money is much better spent elsewhere. 3.23's are a well matched gear to the LS1/4L60E combo. Unless you are capable of doing the gear install and setup yourself, it definitely isn't worth it. Even brand new, properly set up GM gears could whine.
If you have a good 3.23 setup, be happy with it and don't even think about gong 3.73 unless it breaks.
3.23 to 3.73 will at most get you 0.1-0.2 in the quarter, if even that. You'll gain a couple hundred RPMs on the highway. It just isn't worth it.
If you want all out harder launches then start looking into a stall.

Re: Good old gear question
I've had 2.73's, 3.23's, 3.73's, and 4.10's in my car w/A4 tranny
. Yes, I'm nuts, don't ask how/why all these ratios in 1 car!!!
ANYWAY, from MY experience w/2.73's & 4.10's (I'll use the gears I ran the most) I liked them both, but for different reasons obviously. However, they both seemed to behave "similar" to each other (or at least I had them figured out?
) for shift points/speeds, the only difference being, 3rd gear w/2.73's was like 4th gear w/4.10's.
However, at the end when I had the 3.23's in the car, they were a very "nice" gear ... decent acceleration off the line, decent highway cruising RPM's, but IMO ... this is just IMO ... they were kind of "blah" in between?
I don't know, maybe I just never had the downshift points figured out, because they felt like they had more dead spots than with the other ratios I was used to running?
I think I'd personally rather 3.73's over 3.23's if I had to make that choice, but I'd probably opt for 4.10's over 3.73's!
