Ghetto tranny removal

Allright, here is my plan to remove the transmission. Since my jack doesn't go up very high, I was thinking about stacking wood up to the height of the transmission (A4) while it is at the stock height, and remove it from there. Then, I would jack the car up higher with the tranny sitting on the wood blocks. Now, with the car in the air, I would have thwo of my friends lift up on the tranny with me removing as many blocks as I can until the tranny is sitting on a peice of cardboard or a thing peice of wood. I then pull the tranny out towards the front of the car. Does this sound feesable? Can you think of a better way to get it down? I have 2 large ramps, 4 jack stands, chocks, and a smaller jack. Thank you.

Re: Ghetto tranny removal

Dude - I did a serious ghetto tranny removal a few years ago. I loosened all the bolts in the bellhousing, slid underneath, lifted my knees up to the tranny, then yanked it out onto my legs. That will probably be the last time I try that. Even being tall (6'3") I had a hard time getting that thing down.

Seriously man? Go buy a better jack, you wont regret it. Don't hurt yourself trying to lug that thing out, 4l60e's are pretty heavy.

I agree. Go buy a better Jack.
It will pay for itself over and over again.
Get a 1 1/2 to 2 foot square piece of partical board about 1 inch thick and it will be pretty easy to get it out.
Have a friend help you, I love working on the car by myself but a tranny R&R is at least a 2 person job.

Re: Ghetto tranny removal

you can always jack the car up to the height of the jack then put a 4x4 or a couple of 2x4's on the cradle of the jack and get a couple of more inches
