gears whine... Y?

I did a gear swap a few months agao. In the beginning, they wouldn't whine. They now whine really loud on decelleration at any speed. Any ideas on why, or how the can be fixed to eliminate the whine? The gears are 3.73's and were purchased used, if that helps.

is the front pinoin seal leaking? common with backyard installs, you didn't put any locktite on the pinion nut and it came loose, when you let off the gas the ring gear sucks in the pinoin and you get the whine.

Could be... I haven't had time to look into it, but I definately will. Hopefully it's an easy fix as you describe.

peak your head under and see if there is any oil dripping from the torque arm bolts, dead give away.

I can't believe I didn't check the pinion nut first. Turns out it was a little loose. I put some locktite on, tightened it, and the whine is gone now. Thanks for the quick response 86Z.

if you get a chance take a pin punch " a punch that comes to a dull point " and push the punion nut into the threads, it will act like a lock. also what did you use an impact gun?
if you dont know what i'm talking about i can e-mail you a pic. just give me your address.

You shouldn't have to stake the pinion nut. Locktite should be enough. Although I have heard of people staking and even spot welding the pinion nut. Overkill IMO, but to each his own.
