Gears now or save up for 12 bolt?

I've got a bit of a dilema (sp?) My LE1.5 will be in next week, and I know I should get some 4.11's with it. But I can't decide weather to do it now or save up for a few months (year even ) and just get them in the 12 bolt. Is there any sort of general consensous (sp?) about this sort of thing. I figure with the $350 or so I'd spend for the gears/install, its almost 25% of the cost of a used 12 bolt. I've got 110k on this one, and I'm sure its on the way out. Throw on some stickies and I'm sure I'll bust the gears up at best, maybe the whole thing. 2 sets of gears and thats half way there. But, I really don't have the $$ for a 12 bolt rear now, and would like some 4.11 to have fun with over the summer. Going to college next year, can't bring the car freshman year I don't want to go spending 2k on something I won't be able to use for a year, but I don't want to snap my rear and not have a car all summer. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Wow, that got long

what clutch are you running? how long do you plan on keeping the car? if you plan on racing with slicks, u should just save for 12 bolt cause u can beat the living crap out of them...it's prob more cost effective to save for a 12 bolt, cause if you blow up your 10 bolt gears, you will have to invest more money...and will never be happy with the outcome

my 2 cents....invest in 12 bolt

I'd definately like to run slicks, but realisticly I'll just be running DR's. Clutch? I see a Spec Stage 3 in my future. Then again, I see a lot of things in the future, who knows which ones will actually happen.

well, if your gonna think a about a spec 3, then def look into a 12bolt!, i know your still in high school, or graduating this year and seems like money is an issue. you could prob pull off installing just gears in the 10 bolt if you dont think about 4500-5500K launches

if you think about that say bye bye to 10 bolt

I am thinking about This package from thunder racing with 4:10's and solid pinion spacer. just some things to boost the strenght of the weak 10bolt, yet i dont have nearly as much power as you

Thats is tempting, but they way I see it is that package is 400, which is 25% of the cost of a used 12 bolt. YOu can sell your stocker for ~200, putting you to ~40% of the cost there. Now, break your beefed up stock, and you're out $600, and still need a new rear. If I thought I were an A4, I might think about doing that, but I'm gonna either go just gears or full on 12 bolt.

I don't think I'd try and install them myself. Forgot to add that in, just add 200 to my figure above That puts you about half way there, looks like the 12 bolt might be the way to go.

I just put in Motive 4.11s in my 10 bolt, and with the price of getting everything plus the PITA of installing it myself, I would definitely say just go ahead and save for a 12 bolt. It'll make you feel better in the long run, knowing you can punch it and not worry about getting stranded.

can i ask where you got the motive 4:11's? i heard they are a bit stronger than 4:10's for some reason...

replaced 1 pinion bearing failed 4 months later then tore all the gears off the pinion and had to do a complete rebuild with new 3.73 gears. had to reshim it twice so far and still whines . Me and my friends just cant seem to get it right you really need to know what your doing to get it right. Im considering a rebuild from a nearby shop a friend of mine owns before I end up losing another set of $200 gears. I dont have nor will I have soon 2000 bucks so 12 bolt is out of the question right now.

Screw the 12 bolt, go for the 9"!! Either way, get ahold of Scott, 1BAD86Z, he can build either to your specifications and he'll give you a hell of a deal on one!

Re: Gears now or save up for 12 bolt?

I put a $1,000 ($450 for an Eaton posi) into rebuilding my 10 bolt when I bought my car, never thought of a 9" or a 12 bolt.

I now have a 9", 35 spline, detroit locker and an aluminum case.

Do it right the first time if you plan to race or drive hard on the street.
