Re: Gears for Manuals

Stock you have a 3.42 rearend. As for what and when you should change them to is up to you. Some people like 4.11 or even 4.56 gears, but I personally wouldn't put in anything bigger then 3.73's especially if it's your daily driven and even if it was only a nice weather car I wouldn't go bigger. Now maybe if I had a track only car I would put 4.11's in.

Re: Gears for Manuals

all m6 cars after 93 came with 3.42 gears

if you do alot of highway driving you can step up to 3.73 without losing much. i think i comes out to only about 200 more rpms on the highway in 6th. 4.10s would be next.

but unless you are running DRs you probably will never hook with really high gears.

i've wanted to do gears just so i can use 6th more often. alot of my driving is 45-50mph...which is kindda in between 5th and 6th...at least if i'm trying to get good gas milage. stepping up 200 rpms would be perfect for that driving. and i do limited highway so i'm not worried about that.

Re: Gears for Manuals

I have an A4 but my brother has had a few M6 cars and they all had stock 3.42's. In my humble opinion I would stay with the 3.42's with the stock cam as I felt they were prefectly matched to the car's powerband and transmission gear spacing.

Once you move up to bigger gearsl you will start wanting to think about some Suspension mods. My LS1 cammed spins on a third gear downshift w/the 3:42's and my Z cant be floored thrue any RPM in first w/out drag radials.
