Gears

Ok well this summer im planning on getting 4.10s. If i get the gears and the install kit from SLP do you think me and a buddy can do it ourselves? If so how hard? And dont I have to get my PCM reprogrammed so my speedo isnt off? and how much of a difference does it make in the speedo?

Re: Gears

The difference wont be that far off until you get into the higher MPH range and its still not that bad, but a good recommendation to reprogram the pcm, the install isnt too difficult if you know what you are doing, and if you know how to set back lash (on my first try wasnt satisfied and ended pullin it at least 10 times before I was..I know somewhat about it and still wouldnt do it my self after that, but if you follow steps or procedures given..go for it by all means..wouldnt really recommend slp though..

Re: Gears

What gears do you have now... if you're starting with 2.73's, the speedo error is going to be 50%. The speedo would be showing 90mph at a true 60mph, and your odometer would be racking up 1,500 miles for every 1,000 miles driven. And with the A4 the shift point programming would be seriously screwed up.

Even if you are starting with 3.42's and an M6 (should include the tran type in you "signature"), the error will be 20%..... its gonna read 72mph at a true 60mph, and rack up 1,200miles when you drive 1,000. I don'g know why you wouldn't do it right and correct the programming in the PCM.

As far as the install, you will need tools to check the backlash, the pinion depth and the bearing pre-load. I'd say its a job to leave to a "pro", and only one with very good references. There is NOTHING worse than a set of gears screaming constantly from improper install.

I have an M6 so its 342s. How much does it usually cost to get your PCM reprogrammed?

Re: Gears

installing the gears isn't hard, installing them so they don't whine is a different story.

think of how many times you hear guys complain about SHOPs installing gears and having whine?? imagine someone doing it for the first time.

when i swapped gears in my IROC we needed a guage to measure the lash (i think that's the term), ie how much space is between the teeth. and also a torque wrench that reads in in-lbs to measure how tight you do the crush sleeve.

we did it to spec and it still whined

i think madwolf does a $150 "budget" tune that does any 4 changes...

Re: Gears

I've been seriously consittering replacing the gear set in my Z because the originals are winning bad after 110k. Problem is, there is only one good speed shop in my area, and I wouldn't trust them to change my oil. There's no way I'm gonna do it myself and end up with the same thing I've got now.

Re: Gears

You don't necessarily need a speed shop for replacing gears. Most 4x4 shops will be more than qualified to do it.

When going from 3.42's to 4.10's, your engine speed will increase by 20%. If you see 2,000rpm at 90mph in 6th gear with the 3.42's, you will be turning 2,400rpm with the 4.10's.
