Gears

am having my rear differential rebuilt and wondering if I should go ahead and step up to a higher gear ratio. It is inevitable that it will be rebuilt so wondering if you all know if it is still about the same cost for parts for the Stock rebuild versus a higher performance rear end kit.... thoughts? suggestions?

is also getting rebuilt at the dealer...so curious if GM actually makes higher gears or not....

You need to know the same thing I do. What gears do you have now? We either have a 3.23 and lower....or a 3.23 and higher carrier. If it's the 3.23 and lower all we could get would be 3.08s' or 2.73s'. YUCK.

If we have the 3.23 and higher carrier we can get 3.42, 3.73, or even 4.10s'.

I have 3.23 gears out back but I don't know which carrier it is. I'm hoping I have a 3.23 and higher carrier and if so I'll opt for 3.42s'. Good all around gear.

Bought my 97 Z28 with 2.73 (two series carrier). Just got them replaced day before yesterday with 3.73's. You have to order the ones that are cut for a two series carrier (summit, jeg, everyone has them). I gotta say I am really pleased with the difference, really woke that car up. But traction is little to none existant now, even after I've shifted into second (A4). If you gunna be rebuilding the rear end and have the existing gears out...your only gunna spend about 200 bucks more......

i was always under the impression that if you had a 323 you had the 3 series carrier...
