gear swap

I want to buy a rear end off a 94 with 3.73 gears and no traction control, and put it in my 95 with traction control....If I directly installed this rear in my car would it just delete the traction control, if so no big deal...
If that won't work then would it be possible for me to switch out all the bearings, gears, and axles into my rear housing so traction control would work and all

Re: gear swap

does your car have abs? if so is it 3 or 4 channel? 4 channel will have a sensor at each wheel and the 3 will have a sensor on top of the differential. The 94 rear with no TC may have a plug in the top of the diff case for a sensor. If so, just swap the sensor into the housing you're going to use. If you decide to keep the TC, then you need to use the correct reluctor ring (goes around the carrier like a ring gear. this is what the sensor reads off of). If you've got 2.73s in the car now, you'll need to get the reluctor ring for a car with a 3 series carrier and put it onto the carrier with the 3.73's. Alot of options here, sorry if I confused you. If you need any clarification, shoot me an email or IM me nastyl98transam

and yes, you can swap all of the parts from the 94 housing onto yours, but all you NEED to do is the carrier, ring/pinion. Make sure to set the backlash properly.

Re: gear swap

If the 3.73's you're getting are already setup, and you don't want to change that, then you can pull your axles (with the reluctor rings on them for TCS) and put them into the 3.73 diff, and change the whole axle assembly. The diff you're getting will have the ABS sensor on the top of the pumpkin, but it can stay there...it's not hurting anything.

Re: gear swap

thanks capn pete, you cleared everything up for me
just to set the record straight...The rear is comin from a 94 z with abs and no traction control, it is the housing with all gears and axles (no brakes or anything else)....I want to put it in my 95 z m6, which has abs and traction control.......In order to put his rear in, I have to swap my axles into his rear and put on my brakes and everything else, and then everything (abs, tcs) will work fine right.......Just making sure this is all totaly correct, let me know.

thanyou very much all

Re: gear swap

^^^ yes.

And just FYI (NastyTA was talking about this):
- 3 channel ABS is what non traction controlled cars have - 1 ABS sensor on the pumpkin, and 1 on each of the front wheels.
- 4 channel ABS / TCS is for traction controlled cars with a sensor on each rear axle, as well as both front wheels.

Re: gear swap

OH, ok I get what your saying about the 3- channel and 4- channel...So When I switch his rear in I will not have anything to connect up to the abs sensor in the pumpkin cause mine are on each side of the axles with the traction control... and I will just leave the one in the pumpkin plug in, right.

thanks alot

Re: gear swap

That's correct. You won't have any wires in your car that will plug into the ABS sensor on the pumpkin, since you've got TCS. You'll notice when you pull your original diff, that there isn't even a hole where that sensor is supposed to go (only a flat surface where the hole can go). That's why I'd recommend leaving the sensor in place...as a plug!
