Gear Change Question
Gear Change Question
Hello, i plan on getting 3.73 gears, right now i hate the dreaded 2.73's. Ok, i have a big question, what is EVERYTHING i will need to purchase?? I have heard i will need a reluctor ring for my abs? is that correct? Could you just add everything i need to purchase? And maybe tell me a good place to purchase it all? Thanks!
Re: Gear Change Question
I don't think you'll need a reluctor ring. where did you here that? If you are keeping your carrier and you have ABS, reluctor teeth are already on there, as far as I now they are a solid piece with the carrier, not a separate ring.
You will need 3.73 gears ($200) specifically for 2-series carrier, unless you are going to buy Eaton or Auburn posi($???). In that case buy gears for 3-series. You'll need master rebuild kit ($100) + axle bearings/seals ($20), there is no point of taking everything apart and not putting fresh bearings and seals in. I'd also recommend solid solid spacer ($18) instead of crush sleeve. And if you are going to do any kind of spirited driving, I'd also get aluminum cover with support girdle ($170). In my rear end, I also put new Moser axles ($225).
Are you planning to do this yourself? If yes, you'll also need tools:
- strong impact wrench
- shop press
- bearing splitter
- gear pullers (only 2 way), may need different sizes
- 30-60 in-lbs tq wrench
- 150 ft-lbs tq wrench
- dial indicator with magnetic base and dial calipers
- largest breaker bar you can find
- setup bearings will help, especially if you doing it the first time ($50)
- 3-4 lbs. sledge hammer and/or dead blow

Re: Gear Change Question
Buy the main parts like the gears, carrier, diff, ABS reluculator gear (from SLP $20), but don't buy an install kit. The place you are having it installed at/hopefully a specialty drivetrain place will be able to order what they need....such as if you want to replace wheel bearings, and such.
