gap where axle meets rearend
i was removing my center counsel today and when pulling the ebrake up something gave under the car . (ebrake cable just popped out of braket-)
so i jacked my car up to trace the problem, and was confronted with oil all over the front of my rearend and sprayed in a 360 around the bottom of the car.
upon further inspection theres about a 3/16" gap where the driveshaft meets up with the rear
this does not appear to be a good thing. good 3/16" gap between the two. I know very little about rear ends and drivetrain so was wondering what could have caused it, what i should check, how to go about fixing? anything in general.
other details -
- shattered posi and gears at track 5 months ago, had new era performance rebuild it with an eaton pro posi, motive 4.10s and a rebuild kit. everything was replaced and rebuilt. had no problems since.
- rearend was fine and clean 2 weeks ago when i was last under there
- about that time i started noticing im getting a banging and can feel something hitting through my transmission when i go to shift gears or just move between the gears with clutch in.
- noticed today that the passenger rear side of car is now sitting full 1" lower than drivers
thanks guys, Just got a new job paying very good, so if this is a big issue, may pursuade me to pull the car off the street for good, and start building her for the dragstrip with a 12 bolt and new suspension.

Re: gap where axle meets rearend
If you were engaging the ebrake maybe a brake line gave way. Doesn't look like a pinion seal problem to me. That gap between the yoke and pumpkin is normal. Mine is like that in both my camaro rear ends.

hmm wierd. everyone i talked to said it shouldnt be there. and its definately not brake fluid.
the ebrake cable just popped out of the bracket where it branches to both rear brakes. and the oil is sprayed in in 360 degrees under the car coming right from the pinion. So it definately happened while driving and is being thrown out of there.
thanks for the input- now im real curious about that gap - anyone else know if it should be there?
